With the UK still under measures of social isolation, I’ve been thinking about the theme of my last blog, Staying Connected, and all the imaginative ways people have been finding to stay connected to one another.
As a writer, it got me thinking about stories and what they communicate. A favourite pastime when I was young was whiling away the hours in my bedroom writing weird and wonderful adventure stories. I wondered what stories children might come up with at this time, what places their imagination might take them. And so, I spoke to children I know and asked them, ‘Would you like to write a story that I could share on my website?’ I was thrilled to receive the first entry yesterday.
Thank you to Alex for sending in his wonderful story about a nature walk. I should mention that not only did Alex write the story but he also typed it. I love it and hope that on one of my walks, I get to meet a fox too.
The Family Of 4
By Alexander Willmott, age 9, from Exeter, UK
Once there was a family of 4. The dad was called Jon. He was hugely tall, strong and extremely happy. Mum was called Franky. She was fashionable, caring and kind to everyone. The older child, Alex (a boy), was cunning, fast and curious to everything. Beth was a sweet lovely little girl that cared about people. Last but not least was Sniffles, the speeding tiny dog.
When everyone was awake, they had breakfast. Dad was thinking about going to the nearby wood so he said excitedly, “Who would like to go to the woods today!!!’’
“YES!!!’’ everyone screamed!!!
After breakfast everyone got dressed and packed their things. In minutes they were in the van with Sniffles. Then they were on their way.
When they got there it was beautiful, the smells, the sun and nature. Off they went seeing red squirrels. Sniffles did sniff everything and then Sniffles did his business. When everyone was silent at lunch a fox came out to cross the path. The family watched it quietly and cautiously. The fox disappeared into bushes. The family finished their nature walk after lunch.
In the van everyone was really happy so when they were home Alex wanted to write a story. It said –
‘On the 8th April in the morning, when we were all awake, dad asked us if we wanted to go on a walk in the forest. We said excitedly, “YES.’’ In minutes we were in the van. Soon we were there so I walked our dog called Sniffles. He did a stinky mess. My family sat down and had lunch. You never believe what I saw, I saw a fox. It was amazing. Then we got in the van and went home.’
Alex shared his story with all his friends and family.
